I’m a sucker for a Len Lye pic

And today we were shown Colour Flight (1937) as part of the Film Archive presentation on Medianet – the programme they have to run local servers in local centres with local content – so machines in libraries and other places. A prototype will be set up in AUckland, Wellington and Dunedin, so we won’t be lucky enough to see it until after July 2009 – expressions of interest are being taken now.

The system uses playlists and there are hopes for public user accounts – this project focuses on community access and getting local content in local communities. Interesting stuff,  but with costs. Pity Christchurch misses out.

I thought the Len Lye piece was so reminiscent of the windows media player visualisations – but on gas! He was such a visionary – if you ever get the chance to go to The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, you should!

It’s on my list. And it turns out I was wrong – Christchurch will be part of the Medianet project. There’s a spot at the Arts Centre which will host the Medianet equipment. I’m really pleased I was wrong – it will be a great community resource.
