Te rongoā Māori

He KupengaAs the article on Te rongoa Māori states, “rongoā is the word for remedies that are created from natural plants and trees”.

These traditional healing methods are best described in Murdoch Riley’s Maori Healing and Herbal. Part 1 includes “Maori healing and health topics” such as colds, coughs, warts and worms. Each entry refers the reader to Part 2, “Maori herbal remedies”, where over 200 plants and their remedial uses are described. The plants are listed in alphabetical order while the references from both printed and manuscript sources are arranged in chronological order, giving the reader a picture of how the plant was used over the years. Most plants are accompanied by colour photographs.

For more information check out the article on our website, it features a few remedies as well as links to online resources and other books about Rongoā in our collection.
