Earthquakes and Google maps

The Christchurch Quake Map site has been compelling viewing since September 4 but now there’s a way to take your seismological observations a step further and see exactly where a tremor has hit hardest:

  • Go to the Geonet website, choose the Earthquake button and then the Recent Earthquakes option
  • Select from the list of thirty recent New Zealand earthquakes and bring up “Details”
  • Copy the longitude/latitude information, paste into Google Maps and search – a red marker will show you exactly where the tremor was strongest right down to the street name and number.
